The first Women’s Exchange opened in 1832 in Philadelphia when there were few option for women who were truly destitute.  Women who needed to work to support themselves and their families had little opportunity in a male dominated work force.  For these women selling handmade goods at the Exchange was a welcome alternative to the horrible working conditions in factories and other less desirable fields.

The Greenwich Exchange was incorporated in 1901.  They own their own building.  Their gift shop give artisans here and in developing countries opportunities to earn income that pays for food, education healthcare and housing. It is run by a volunteer board of directors and volunteers in the shop. Their goal is to support the art of hand crafted items by providing a marketplace for artisans and consignors who create thoughtful, modestly priced one of a kind gifts.
